The glass is SUPER hard and scratching should never happen just from the Pencil unless the glass is dirty (see below). If you bear down so hard you’re afraid you might crack the screen, practice controlling your hand and pressure often. If you feel your hand clenching too much, you’re probably bearing down too hard too.
Newer iPads have an “oleographic coating” on the glass that’s supposed to reduce smudging. NAH. Doesn’t work!
Keep the glass CLEAN with a good quality lens cleaning spray and microfiber cloth, so any gritty dust that might settle on the glass doesn’t get caught on the tip, which CAN scratch the glass. That said, if it feels at ALL “scratchy” and the screen is shiny clean, you probably need to change the Pencil tip. They definite wear down over time, or can get rough if you don’t keep the glass clean. Pencil tips are the best deal Apple offers; 4 for $19, not bad! With extra tips on hand, you won’t be afraid to change tips as needed.
Most drawing apps allow you to manually set the pencil to your preferred pressure angles and curves with the pencil. Hope this helps!

Should NOT have to apply a whole lot of pressure on an iPad's screen when using an Pencil.
What app/s are you trying to use with this Pencil?
Make sure the tip of the Pencil is screwed on securely and snugly ( NOT TOO tight! ).

Simply don’t put too much pressure on the iPad.
Try to use you Apple Pencil where there is no back light being visible

That doesn't make sense. The entire screen is backlit.
