iOS 14.6 Update and Lost Pictures/Data

My iPhone 6s recently automatically updated to iOS 14.6 but while doing so, it crashed and I had to connect my phone to a PC to do the update. After my phone restarted, it seems as though it went through a factory reset while still keeping my contacts and some pictures. However, most of my apps were deleted and thousands of my pictures (the most recent ones) are missing. My message history also disappeared. I am afraid that my iCloud storage wasn’t big enough before so some of my data may not have gotten saved before the update. I would really like to get my pictures back. How could I do this?

Also, after the update I am not able to send iMessages even though I have a stable WiFi connection. Is there any way I could fix this? I have already tried turning on/off WiFi, messaging, and several other things that were supposed to help with this problem but nothing has worked so far.

Hello totally-rad,

We understand that some pictures are missing, and you're also running into an issue sending iMessages. We'd like to help.

We get that pictures are important. If pictures are missing on your device, the information here may help: If you're missing photos or videos in the Photos app

As for the issue with iMessage, can you let us know more about that? Is the issue only happening with iMessages? In other words, are you able to send SMS/MMS messages without an issue?

Are you seeing a specific error when trying to activate iMessage at this time? If so, please see if the steps here help: If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime

Thanks!

totally-rad,

Thanks so much for letting us know more about the situation.

Just to confirm, were you using iCloud Photos previously? If you view your photos on the iCloud website, do the missing photos appear there? More about that under the "Download your photos and videos from iCloud.com" part of this page: Set up and use iCloud Photos

At any point, after updating your device, did you try to restore it from a backup? If information is missing after a backup was restored, these steps may help: About missing information after you restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iCloud Backup

For the issue with sending messages, the "If you see a red exclamation point" section of this link outlines what to do if you're unable to send messages: If you can't send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thank you!

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately, I cannot recover my pictures using the information you linked. I think they may have never saved to my iCloud in the first place. Is there any way to get them back knowing this?

As for messaging, SMS/MMS messages are not sending either. When I try to send a message, I get an error that simply says “not delivered” and prompts me to try again. What should I do in this case? I have tried restarting my phone (several times) but nothing has happened.
