How can I keep my photo sort order when importing to Photos?

I have over a 100 photos that I want to keep in the order according to the naming convention I created, but no matter what I do, these photos will not be in that order when they arrive into the folder within Photos. I have imported by the folder, checked the "Keep Folder Organization", but nothing works..they are still randomly arranged. This means too much rearranging work for the simple Slideshow I need to produce.

Can this even be done using Photos?

If your filenaming is alphabetic, you can put the photos in an album and (or if they are already in an album) right click the album and select sort>keep sorted by title.

That should then sort by filename.

Try this AppleScript first, Script: Changing the Title to the Filename without Extension, on the photos is the album and then do a Sort by Title. Also there must not be any text in the Title field for the script to work.

The script compiled as an application can be downloaded from this tutorial site:  P01 - Applescripts from Photos’ User Tips Compiled as Applications.  To launch it the first time Control (right) - click on it and select Open from the contextual menu.

The first time you launch the app Control (right) - click on it and select Open from the contextual menu.

So renamed in finder?

No doubt - I meant previously imported into your library, not someone else's.

So you use file>import to bring them into photos.

It is not possible for photos to know the previous filename - unless you've previously imported them and not fully deleted them from the library. The filename is not stored anywhere except in the filename, if you've changed that, then the original one is not stored anywhere. There is nowhere for photos to get it from.

Try creating a new empty library, and importing them into that. (Hold down the option key while starting photos, and click "create new"

Tony, thanks for responding; however, I've tried every variation (title, kind, etc) based on the alphanumeric (e.g., A-01) naming convention I set up and the import into Photos always sorts them using the original file name (e.g., img_2400). Utilizing the "Show Inspector" tool clearly shows the new name, but the import process seems to strip this off and reverts to the old file. Still cannot get them to appear in the Photo album in order and sorting by title after they are in the album produces no change. Baffling to me...

  • Either right-click, Rename or Get Info and renaming in the Name & Extension field.
  • No doubt. I received these from a family friend, and she may have gotten them from daughter and son-in-law.
  • I import from within Photos - the folders with the renamed files are on my desktop.
  • Yes, Titles is enabled in the metadata view....but no, once the file has been imported into a new album in Photos, it retains the original file name...that's the problem.

Given the amount of time I spent with renaming the photos prior to their import into Photos, it would be too time-intensive to rename them again individually after importing them into Photos. That may be a lesson learned for a future project. I went ahead and put in the time to make this a movie rather than the simpler slideshow.
