What is root.tar.xz on my 2015 Mojave 13" MacBook Air? If not needed, I wouldn't mind the 2GB space ...

Google This: intitle:"root.tar.xz"

Googling it, and not clicking on any link, it looks like it is a compressed installer for the filesystem (which is nothing to fiddle with). So where are you seeing this?
