Udemy blank screen on external monitor (MBP16)

MacBook Pro 16

2TB / 32GB / 5500M 8GB

Watching Udemy using Safari on Samsung Monitor LC27F390 external monitor.

There is audio but the video is showing up a blank screen. The video shows up when I move the Safari window back to the built-in monitor.

Weirdly, there is no problem if I use Google Chrome.

Previously I have similar problem with my 2013 MacBook Air. I just had to relaunch Safari and video will show. However, no such luck with my MBP16.

Anyone has a solution to this? Or it's a known issue?

Thank you.

Hey tzevoon!

Thanks for touching base here in Apple Support Communities. If we understand correctly, you're having trouble watching content using your external display in macOS.

Does this seem to happen with any other video related content outside of Udemy?

Have you tried restarting both devices to see if the issue continues?

You can also test booting in and out of safe mode to see if the issue continues.

Safe mode will clear the system cache and repair directory related issues.

Checking your hardware connections is also a good idea.If the issue continues you can also try resetting the NVRAM on the Mac.

Take a look at the resources below and keep us updated.

We appreciate you giving those steps a try and keeping us updated. Have you also tries clearing your Safari cache and history?

Since this seems to only occur using Udemy, it might be a good idea to reach out to Udemy support for further investigation. The links below can help.

Hi Dave,

It seems to be affecting only Udemy - no problem with YouTube and videos in Facebook. I've already tried restarting both the devices and the problem persists.

I will try to boot in and out of safe mode later tonight.

I've reset PRAM a few times before this because the Touch ID has been very slow or non-responsive at times. I've not reset NVRAM yet.

I will also try to reset NVRAM tonight if safe mode doesn't help.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Will update again once I've tried these steps.
