If you desire to encrypt your HDD contents while “at rest” then yes, File Vault is “worth it.”

At boot time you need to get the encryption key, to unlock access to the boot device. FileVault does not know which authorized user you are, and it does not have access to your login preferences until it has access to your boot disk. This is the only display FileVault has to get access to the encryption key.
