There are several options in this link→Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.

However, the easiest is to use iCloud. First, download iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft Store (it’s free) and log in to your Apple ID in the app. Then on your phone go to Settings/[your name]/iCloud and turn on Photos. That’s it. All of the photos on your phone will sync to iCloud, and then to iCloud for Windows. If you like you can copy the photos to some other photo management app on your PC from iCloud for Windows, or just leave them there.

Once the initial sync is done any new photos taken on your phone will be transferred to your PC within seconds.

So. Understanding that you, and many others think iCloud hung the moon, IF I DO NOT want to use iCloud...what is the best way to copy photos from my iPhone to a folder I specify at the time of the copy request on my PC? There used to be a CANNON utility that would recognize photos on an iPhone and let you copy and erase them without using iTunes. AFAIK, iTunes only does a complete backup of the phone data to its own folders. Not what I am looking for...help please.

Has no one actually read this thread? I posted a link (I assume you know what a link is) in the Apple Recommended post above that describes several ways to copy photos from an iPhone to a computer, and NONE OF THEM USE ITUNES, and iTunes is not capable of importing photos, so you are beating a dead strawman. And even the Canon utility used the drivers installed as part of the iTunes installation process. Oh, and the link also doesn’t mention backing up to iTunes, either. It describes how to copy photos using a Microsoft utility over a USB cable.
