I have an iMac running Big Sur and a MacBook Pro running High Sierra (too old to update the OS). Air Drop worked fine when the iMac was running Catalina but since updating to Big Sur the two devices do not see each other. I have tried all of the fixes on this website but nothing seems to work. I have to copy items to a memory stick to transfer files between the computers.

On the MBP in Finder's Go Menu>Connect to Server... smb://your.local or browse button. :)

Yes, I realised almost as soon as I had sent the reply that my answer was unclear. What I should have written is that the next step is where I'm stuck. Where do I enter "MyComputerName.local" to allow the MacBook Pro to access files on the iMac?
Have you tried setting up File Sharing?
I'm in the middle o fsome things so can't boot into my least favorite OS, Big Sur to test with HS.
File sharing is active on both computers.
And that doesn't work in place of Airdrop?
I'm trying to work out how to use FileSharing. Google seems only to tell you the first couple of steps. I cannot get the two computers to communicate with one another.
Yes, mine looks like that. Where would I type "im21.local" in the other computer to access my iMac?
im21.local is just my 21.5" iMac, yours would show a different name, whatever the Computer Name is plus .local.
