Disc is full

I can't even empty my trash to clear up storage because my disc is full.

What's the next step?

Start up in SafeMode and then empty the Trash. More imporantly you need a high quality EHD and enclosure such as a OWC Mercury Elite Pro and then move yor large libraries of music, movies and photos to the EHD so you can free up the storage on your iMac!!!!

How much free space do you have on your internal boot drive?

If you can't boot into Safe Mode the you may have to connected your Mac to another Mac in Target Disk Mode  and let the other Mac copy files from your Mac to an EHD and then delete them from your Mac.

Next time include, at a minimum, your Mac model and year, the amount of RAM installed, the type and size of hard drive and the system you're running. Please read the following user tip: Writing an Effective Apple Support Communities Question - Apple Community

It's generally recommended to maintain a minimum of 25 GB of free space for proper system and application performance, more if possible. I try to keep a minimum of 90-100 GB free.
