backing up
I am having problems with backing up to my new macbook air ever since purchase October/November 2020. It recognises the device but when I go and back up nothing happens.
MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.11

Are you using Apple Time Machine software?
Try connecting the drive and running Disk Utility to repair it.
If DU says the drive is ok and it still won't back up I would erase it completely and start with a new backup set.
When thinking about backups remember that if you back up a file to an external device and then delete the file from your computer you no longer have a backup of that file, the only copy that exists is on the external.

What method of backup are you using? Time Machine? Clone? Other?
What device are you backing up to? More info is better.
I was using a portable device called passport. It always worked before...I would just connect it...click "back up" and off it would go. This time it recognises the passport but nothing happens when i click on back up
