Why use "Airdrop" to transfer documents between devices when using the "Handoff" feature? Isn't this redundant?

AirDrop is geared more towards explicit sharing amongst users - for example, transferring a document, photo, etc. from your device to another user in range.
Handoff is geared more towards transparent sharing across your own devices.
For example:
Copy data on your Mac and paste to your phone - > Handoff
View a web page on your phone and continue reading on your Mac -> Handoff
Pick a restaurant to eat at and send the location to your friends so you all know where to go -> AirDrop
Send your friends a copy of your cute pet photo -> AirDrop
You can't use Handoff in the latter cases because the destination device(s) are not your own.

I own iPhones and use Macs but my head gets twisted regarding sharing on the network and off and the best way to utilize the features.
Thank you.
