Unable To Print To Windows Print Server Managed Printers In Big Sur (Seems SMB/CIFS Auth Related)
So where to begin...
I work for a school district (K-12) as a System Admin.
Here is our environment.
Client Machines: Mixed (Mac & Windows)
Printing System Configuration: Windows Print Server (PaperCut NG additionally)
Windows Machines are able to print thru the print server with no issue. Macs up till Catalina may also print.
Then came Big Sur. Printing To Windows Print Server Managed Printers...Not So Printy.
Does it work:
- On New Install - Nope
- On Upgrade - YES (Until Next Day Or Reboot, Then It Is Semi-Perma-Hosed)
- After Reboot - Nope
- Resetting Printing System - Nope
- Removing & Re-Adding Printer - Nope
- Different Drivers - Nope
- Printing Direct To Printer - YEP
And when I say it won't print (for the ways that didn't work), there is nothing. It doesn't hit the queue, locally or on the print server. There is no happy bouncing printer icon to instill a sense of hope or joy.
I have gone thru logs and found very little, but the little I did find led me to further investigate the SMB connection used for printing.
Two Ways I WAS able to print with the desired configuration (added from AD):
> lpr TestDocument.pdf
Running The "lpr" command with a file to print allowed printing to the default printer without further steps. However this did nothing to allow the system to print in other applications.
> smbutil view -A //DOMAIN;Username@print.server.edu/Printer_Share_Name
Running this command and authenticating against the share with my credentials did do the trick. This will allow printing as desired system-wide until a reboot (or potentially a timeout, haven't had enough idle time for it to stop yet).
And with both of these options the job visibly hit the print queue on the server.
In case it needs to be said, I do not believe this to be driver related...so if your input involves drivers, please just don't lol Unless the goal is to be trolly, then I am good with it.
So with that,
Thoughts?
