Battery preferences are greyed out.

Battery preferences are greyed out and cannot be adjusted. MacBook times out in a couple minutes even when plugged in. Any suggestions?

Troubleshooting Power:

A. Please Clarify:

  • Did you install an update?
  • Have you had battery issues before?
  • Has this Mac been serviced recently?
  • What were you working on when this happened?


B. Try a New Charger:

If it is charing from an external device, then use a new charger:

Who Installed the Battery?:

Sometimes, you get an error like this when a third-party installs a battery that is not officially Apple certified. So, who replaced this? It may not be an official Apple certified battery.
