i had a message that my apple account was login somewhere in virginia. it wasnt me

iPhone 11 Pro Max, iOS 14

Several possibilities. One is it was a real notification and your location was misidentified:


See the section titled, "What if I don’t recognize the location shown in my sign in notification?" by clicking on the link for this support article 'Two-factor authentication for Apple ID' --> https://support.apple.com/HT204915


Another is it is phishing, particularly if it is providing a bogus link for you to log in. Scams (e-mail, text messages, and phone calls) are getting very good at closely imitating true Apple communications. Always be cautious. Here are some guidelines:


Identifying legitimate emails from the iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/HT201679 - lacking in specifics, the next link is better:


Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - https://support.apple.com/HT204759
