Finder doesnt recognize iPhone but iTunes does

Hi ... I have an old iMac 2011, running macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). System tells me this is the up-to-date OS. Finder is version 10.13.6.

When I connect my iPhone 12 via USB, the phone appears in iTunes, but not in Finder. All the online help suggests there is more recent version of Finder out there. When I look in the Finder sidebar I get the option for 'CDs, DVDs, and iPods', rather than '...,iOS devices'. This suggests that Finder is out of date, but the AppStore is not suggesting an update.

My end goal is to stop syncing my photos, so that I can delete the old ones off my phone. Currently I am unable to delete older photos (delete bin button is greyed out). I would appreciate any advice!

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, N8MacUser!

We understand you confused on why your iPhone appears in iTunes but not Finder. We'd be happy to provide information about this.

Starting in macOS Catalina, the iTunes app is no longer available. All syncing occurs through Finder. You mentioned you have macOS High Sierra, so the option here to sync is iTunes.

We'd like to help you out with your end goal to stop syncing photos. Would you please tell us if you're referring to syncing between your computer and your iPhone or if you mean between your iPhone and iCloud?

If you mean you want to remove your photos synced from your computer, you would follow the same steps as the ones listed for Finder, but from iTunes:

Sync your photos manually using the Finder

We hope this clears things up.

Have a great day!
