Why would connected calls be recorded as ‘canceled’ on my call log? All of the calls in question involve calls that were routed to voicemail, and I left a message each time. Normally calls such as this would appear as ‘outgoing’ call of short duration on my call log.

The canceled status message will sometimes appear on calls that were disconnected on your end before the call was completed, or when leaving a voicemail. Outgoing call should only normally be shown when the call was connected to someone or an automated system.
You can also check with your mobile carrier, to see if they have a specific set of criteria they consider to be a canceled call versus outgoing.
