Adding existing Apple ID to Family Sharing

My son received an iPhone from his Aunt who set it up with a gmail address as his Apple ID instead of the iCloud Apple ID that I already have for him in Family Sharing. Now I’m trying to add this new gmail Apple ID to Family Sharing. The only instructions I can find to add a child to FS asks questions as if I’m adding a completely new ID. How do I add an existing Apple ID to FS?

There is no option offers to “Add Member” when I follow these steps. There is an option to “Add Child”, which goes thru a series of screens where I can enter the new Apple ID, but that generates an error message that this ID is already in use.

Hello Illini86,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. We understand you are looking for some information on adding an Apple ID to your Family Sharing group. We are happy to help.

If you already have your Family Sharing group set up, you would just want to go through the steps to add the person to your Family Group by going to Settings > [your name] > Family Sharing, and tap Add Member, and tapping "Invite People" to enter the persons info to send an invite. Take a look at the full steps listed in the section titled "Add a family member":

Set up Family Sharing on iPhone

We hope this information helps.

Best Regards.

Thanks for keeping us updated on this. Family Sharing does have a set limit of 5 people that can be in a family group. How many people are currently in your Family Sharing group?

If you have less than 5 people in the Family Sharing group and you still aren't seeing the option to add another member, we would recommend reaching out to Apple Support directly to investigate the issue further. You can reach out here: Get Support

Cheers.
