I'm trying to set up my new iMac, and the migration assistant isn't finding my Macbook, which is on the same network and literally one foot away! What can I do?

Use a direct connection, or use a Time Machine backup, or use a clone of the boot device created using Disk Utility.

I usually use a backup or a clone, created on an external device and swapped over to the new Mac, and not the wireless migration path.
