Unable to play movies through HDMI cable using Apple Digital AV connector

I have movies and TV shows on my iPad mini 4 that I’ve been watching on my larger display for years. Suddenly, I’m getting a message that “the connected display is not authorized to play protected movies”. I haven’t changed anything in my setup, and am using a genuine Apple adapter.

I do not have (nor do I want to buy) Apple TV. Am I going to be forced into that to be able to watch material I have already paid for?

Help, please!

Thanks.

If you are using the same adapter, the same display, and the same cables, check to make sure the connections are all tight and the adapter and cables haven't been damaged. Sounds like the iPad isn't seeing the HDCP handshake.

As described, HDCP is the issue. Your devices and cables are very likely to be healthy.

When connecting your iPad to your TV/Monitor via the Digital AV Adapter, ensure that the last connection made is the Adapter to the iPad.

Connection of the TV/Monitor to the Adapter should be competed before connecting the Adapter to the iPad. The HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) handshake only occurs when the Adapter is connected to the iPad. If the TV/Monitor os not detected when the Adapter is connected to the iPad, the HDCP handshake will fail.

HDCP is the protection mechanism that allows certain content to be displayed (but not copied) when connected to appropriate devices. HDCP checks that all devices in the connection chain are fully compliant - before permitting content to play. If a compliant monitor is not found, or a recording device is detected, content will not play.

A quirk of more recent iOS/iPadOS versions is that the HDCP handshake only occurs when the Digital AV Adapter is connected to the iPad. The handshake is not repeated when connecting other devices in the connection chain.

It, also, maybe possible that the Motion Picture Industry has forced Apple to put more Digital Rights Management and other Copyright restrictions of how the Industry’s content can be viewed or transmitted on or through Apple devices, IF this was once working fine and now it it not.

Content that you used to be able to view easily using your current setup, may now not work.

I will test my theory with purchased iTunes movie content and get back to you, as I have older Lightning connector iPads and have the Lightning port version of the Digital AV adapter.

I am not sure what movie content or streaming service you are trying to use, but my digital AV adapter is still working fine and was able to stream my installed content through this to the TV from the iPad using the TV app.

I do not have a Netflix account any longer to try this with that service.

So, I am not sure what is going on with your setup.

Apple’s TV App has lots a efferent types of playback restrictions when it comes to playing any video content.

It's Apple's way of making users to have to purchase or rent content, but even with that, sometimes certain movie and TV show content from different companies may limited how it is streamed on these mobile devices today.

Like I stated earlier something in the TV app may have changed ( Apple notoriously NEVER mentions any DRM changes to their TV app, probably because of fear of serious backlash from the user base, when any iOS/iPadOS upgrades/uodates come out. This is when Apple typically issues undocumented changes to the TV aop ).

There were lots of thing the Apple Videos app and the TV used to do, but slowly, little by little, Apple, either as their own decision or a decision forced upon them by the TV and Motion Picture Industry, have taken away many convenience features.

Some other video streaming apps, have also, limited how their content is streamed.

This is what I think has really happened and one of the reasons I do not purchased a lor of Apple iTunes movie and TV show content, any longer.

Apple keeps forcing more viewing restrictions to its TV app.

This has been going on for years.

It has basically gotten intolerable for me and I have taken my own appropriate measures for solving these continued featiure and functionality removals by Apple.

I have videos from other sources on the TV app that Apple won't let me wirelessly play, ovet-the-air, through Apple AirPlay.

So, I have ended up searching for other third party apps and device solutions to do so, again.

Again, nothing that can be discussed here due to the legalities of all of that.

I have found ways ( legal or not and cannot ever be discussed here ) to be able to play my movie and TV show content ( from discs ) to get it to play on my iPad on my own terms.
