Have you had a chance to complete the steps? If so, we suggest resetting your AirPods as shown here: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro
If you continue to experience the same issue, with Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode off and no music playing, verify if you hear an echo. Then turn on Transparency mode and make sure that you hear a chime, and confirm if there are any changes to the external sound.
