Does the software have permission to access drive? Maybe the macOS System Preference "Privacy" preferences are not allowing access to the external drive. Do you have any anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, or third party security software installed that may be interfering?
Using proprietary third party software to access a drive is never a good idea as the software can interfere with the normal operation of macOS, the software can break when there is a macOS update. It is much better and usually more reliable to have macOS manage the external drive by using a file system macOS knows about so it does not require any third party software to access the drive. However, to allow macOS to manage the drive natively requires temporarily transferring the existing files on the external NTFS drive to another location so you can use Disk Utility to completely erase the external drive either as GUID partition and MacOS Extended (Journaled) if the drive will only need to be accessed from macOS or erase the whole physical drive as GUID partition and exFAT if you need to share the drive with Windows.
