Do you need to restore it directly to the mac or can it be restored to the same external drive?

I have a 1tb macbook and have backed up 400gb onto an external drive, if I buy an m1 macbook with 256gb can I still restore it onto the external drive or have parts of it on each?

MacBook Pro (2020 and later)

One Drive Only:

The backup must be one file on one drive -- the file cannot not be dispersed upon multiple drives.
