Wired headphones type C doesn’t work with iPad Pro M1

For my new iPad Pro 12.9 M1, I purchased wired headphones with a Type C connection, but for some reason when I plug it in, the iPad continues to play audio through its speakers and not through the headphones. Indeed, I do able to manage the volume up and down on the iPad through the controls in the headphones, but it do not play audio at all.
