Music stops every time I receive a notification on my Apple Watch

Has there been a fix for this yet? I see numerous posts for this but no real solution. Music is playing from iPhone (Spotify/Pandora) on AirPods, then a notification comes in via Apple Watch, it also plays through AirPods. Then try to tap stem or play music again and it doesn’t until I select the output device on iPhone again.

unpairing isn’t a solution as that then takes away ability to hear notifications from one of my devices or resetting device doesn’t fix.
