MacBook Pro doesn't charge when waking up from sleep

Hi all -

It seems I have the same problem as described in the discussion:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250597956?answerId=251150493022#251150493022

I'm very curious to know if @BlowYourMind ever had the issue resolved.

What happens: MBP and external devices all work fine. Then when MBP goes to sleep and wakes up, the battery no longer charges and slowly starts to drain. Power supply is connected and working (checked). MBP recognises that power supply is connected but indicates that battery is not charging.

Restart doesn't solve the problem. Disconnecting all USB devices and restart doesn't solve the problem.

Shutting down, disconnecting the power supply, reconnecting the power supply, and start the computer does solve the issue! Until the next sleep kicks in.

Anyone have (had) the same issues?

Hi,

Try to check your MacBook Pro with Apple Diagnostics if it reports battery controller related hardware issue.

So after a day of testing everything I zoomed in again on my power supply and found out it wasn't working as it should after all. When connected, the system information reports that it is only supplying 12W of power to the computer. When I switched to another power supply, it shows the full 60W being supplied. Everything is back to working normally now.

The reason I initially thought my power supply wasn't at fault was that when I connected the 2nd power supply, the problems persisted and I reconnected the old power supply and continued the diagnosis. But, when I tried the 2nd power supply a again, and left it connected for a while, the system suddenly started to normally charge the battery. That's when I decided to check the power supply output.
