Screen brightness control greyed out

Mac BookPro 15 inch. Big Sur fully up to date.

Frequently upon wake from sleep the screen brightness control is greyed out. The brightness cannot be adjusted from the keyboard, nor in display properties. Only a restart will restore functionality. I have reset the SRAM/PRAM, but this quirk persists.

Has anyone else had this issue? It only started with an upgrade to Big Sur from Catalina.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.4

Thank you again to both P Phillips + Luis Sequeria, I have two EtreCheck Reports to share

  1. Where the brightness control is behaving normally
  2. Where the brightness control is non-responsive.

I apologise, but I don't have sufficient knowledge to fully understand the significant of the test.

Could I ask you to be kind enough to review the reports?

With deepest thanks in advance.

Application Etrecheck directly from a Trusted Developer and well Respected ASC Contributor. The application is free or paid from added features. Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ). It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software. The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information. Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

From the Report " The screen brightness control is non responsive. "

Below is just a fast check and would await additional input from Luis S before proceeding in-depth fixes. Right off the top, IMHO - most the Applications and Kernel Extensions are either outdated and / or not fully compatible with Big Sur

System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

x86-only Apps - This computer has x86-only apps might not work on future versions of the operating system.

Kernel extensions present - This computer has kernel extensions that may not work in the future.

Unsigned Files: Apps: 3

Old Applications:

145 x86-only apps

Thank you both very much, grey out or just non-responsive screen brightness control applies to both the built in display and the Thunderbolt display the signal for which is passed via A CalDigit. It occurs after about 4-5 sleep wake cycles both when used as a solo laptop or when docked via the Caldigit.

As a further interesting observation, if the laptop sleeps after reaching the designated idle time in battery/power settings the brightness control always fails on wake. Whereas if the laptop is sent to sleep via the Apple menu, functionality of the screen brightness control is preserved through 4-5 cycles after which it fails. By the way the NVRAM and SMC reset has made no difference.

Thanks in advance for your help.
