AirPods randomly disconnecting from iPhone

Why does my AirPods randomly disconnect from my iPhone when using the timer on my Apple Watch? Timer goes off, then AirPods are disconnected from the iPhone, then I have to put the in the case & take them out for them to work again. This has been going on for quite some time. Please fix this Apple!!
