Audio Handoff not working for my MFI Hearing aid between iPad and iPhone
I have an iPhone 8 currently with iOS 14.6 installed and a slightly older iPad Air with iOS version 12.5.4 installed. Audio handoff does not work at all across these two devices as described in various articles and instructions, see the end of this post for citations.
Both devices are configured to be connected to my MFI Hearing Aid which is an Oticon Opn S 2. Both iOS devices show the Oticon Opn as connected under MFI Hearing Devices in settings. Both have Play Ringtones, Control Nearby Devices and Audio Handoff turned on. Both iOS devices have Audio Routing for Call and Media set to "Always Hearing Devices".
If I am using my phone and not near my iPad or the iPad is off, all media plays through my hearing aid from my iPhone and the MFI device shows up in the Audio Playback widget when launched from Control Center. So I will see "iPhone" with an iPhone icon, The name of my hearing device with an ear icon (with a checked icon), then after that there will be the list of "Speakers & TVs".
If I want to watch media or play music on my iPad while the iPhone is on and near my iPad, the iPad will not play media through the hearing aid but will only play through the iPad speakers. No hearing device shows up on the Audio Playback widget from control center only the "iPad" icon which is checked so I can't force it to connect.
If I then shut off my phone, the iPad will then immediately be able to play media to my hearing aid and the Hearing Aid icon shows under the Audio Playback widget in Control Center.
If I then turn my phone on and try to play something on my phone again just after it had been most recently playing to my hearing aids from the iPad, the same thing happens in reverse. The iPhone won't play through the hearing aids and the hearing device doesn't show up in the Audio Playback widget even though the hearing aid still shows as connected in the Hearing Devices area in settings. Seems like the only way to get it back to the phone is to shut down the iPad or move far away from it.
The setting instructions for Audio Handoff says:
"Take the hearing device connection from nearby iOS devices when audio starts"
Elswehere in the Apple Support site in the iPhone Users Guide under "Use Hearing Devices with iPhone" it says:
"Use your hearing devices with more than one device
If you pair your hearing devices with more than one device (both iPhone and iPad, for example), the connection for your hearing devices automatically switches from one to the other when you do something that generates audio on the other device, or when you receive a phone call on iPhone."
Also in this article it describes what the different options are for iPhone Hearing Devices and it says the following about Audio Handoff:
"Audio Handoff
Continue listening to media through your hearing device when you switch between your Apple devices. For example, if your hearing device is connected to your iPhone but you start watching a movie on your iPad, the hearing device automatically switches to the iPad."
None of those things seem to happen for me.
