I have a list of names I wish to capitalize. For example, I wish to put the characters "APRIL" into a cell of Numbers. Numbers insists that I want "April." I have turned off autocorrect in Edit>Spelling and Grammar and in Edit>Substitutions (and also at the keyboard, even though the problem is unique to Numbers.) What else can I do?
If you leave the Data Format as Automatic then Numbers guesses that you mean the date-time value of April 1. If you want the literal text APRIL then first format the cell as Text and then input APRIL.
Or, as a shortcut that doesn't require you to explicitly reformat the cell as Text you can simply type 'APRIL (i.e. an apostrophe followed by APRIL).

Numbers is interpreting the month names as part of a Date & Time format.
Select the cells and in the Format Panel on the right, Cell > Data Format >Text.
Alternatively, enter an apostrophe before the month name, for example 'APRIL to force Numbers to treat it as text.
