Problems ejecting my SamSung SSD external drive from my 2006 iMac 20

I am having problems ejecting my SamSung SSD external drive from my 2006 iMac 20 (Mac OS X Version 10.7.5) that I have not used regularly but had pictures stored in iPhoto that I was working to extract. When trying to eject the SSD drive, I get the message "the volume can't be ejected because It's currently in use". The SSD drive is formatted in ExFat. What is the best way to eject the drive safely? While I have your attention, what is the best way to get picture from iPhoto?

Open iPhoto, > copy the Photos that you want to the external drive > quit iPhotos > Eject and disconnect the external drive.

Then if you are still getting "the volume can't be ejected because It's currently in use" Quit all other open App's, then eject and disconnect the external drive.
