what does device icon in itunes look like? I cannot see it in itunes, but my iphone shows up on my computer

I connected my iphone to my PC. The PC recognizes the iphone. I am using itunes to transfer photos back and forth from PC and iphone. When I open itunes, there is no "device icon" to select so I can see my iphone listed. What does the itunes "device icon" look like? I don't see it when I open the most current version of itunes that I downloaded earlier today.
