You can only transfer contacts from a SIM card. See instructions in Import contacts from your SIM card to your iPhone - Apple Support

For other information see instructions in Move from Android to iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

The phone says it doesn’t understand

That is because, as you were told earlier, the only thing you can get off the SIM is your Contacts. See the links that FoxFifth provided you. One to show you how to get your Contacts off the SIM and in your iPhone and the second on how to move from Android to iPhone for transferring other data. You will need your Android phone and download an app from the Google Play store to facilitate the transfer.
