Mid 2010 iMac as a 2nd monitor to my new Air 2020??

I just bought a 2020 Macbook Air with the M1 chip. Can I use my mid 2010 21.5" iMac as a second monitor? Or am I scrapping the old girl??

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

Sorry, that is not possible for the following reasons:

  • Only certain 2009/2010 27" iMacs had this functionality (Target Display Mode.)
  • Apple Silicon Macs are not compatible with Target Display Mode.
  • macOS Big Sur is not compatible with Target Display Mode.
