At times when I purchase a song it goes into a different file the type is M4a.

It does not allow me to transfer the sone to the music under the artist. What am I doing wrong? I want to use mp3 files.

Thank You

Music purchased from the iTunes Store is (to the best of my knowledge) always in Apple's M4a format, not mp3. If you must have mp3 files, either convert your iTunes Store purchases to mp3 (you can do this in iTunes), or buy them as mp3s from an alternative supplier.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do because there should be no need to "transfer" songs to "artists". Each purchased song should* be listed (shown) under the song title, the artist's name, album title and the genre without you having to do anything.

* An exception to this is artists who appear only on compilation albums are not listed under Artists.

A Compilation album (also known as a Various Artists album); one where each song is by a different artist. If you have any artist who only appears on one of your compilation albums, then that artist will not be listed under Artists. However, if you then add an album, by that same artist, to your Library, then the artist will then be listed under Artists and all their songs (including those on compilations) will also be listed there.

This is because iTunes uses the Album Artist field from their albums to create an entry for that artist. If the Album Artist field is blank, iTunes uses the Artist field instead. But - if the album is marked as a compilation (see screenshots below), the Album Artist field should have Various Artists in the Album Artist field and therefore, it cannot create an artist entry for the songs on that album. The albums will be listed under Compilations in your Library's Songs View.

In the example above, the album is a collection of songs by different artists; a compilation album. Notice that:

    • the artist field says mixed, because there is more than one artist in my selection (all the songs on the album)
    • the album artist field says Various Artists, which is true. This field controls where the album is listed under Artists. Because it's a compilation, it will be listed under various artists in the Albums view
    • the compilation flag is on (the compilation box is ticked)
    • none of the artists on this album (including Mr. Gone, with two songs) will have an entry under their artist name unless they also have an album in my Library

Compare this with a single-artist album:

  • There is only one artist for this album and the compilation flag is not on, the Album Artist is assumed to be the same as the artist field. Therefore, the artist Jocelyn Pook has her own entry under Artists.
