Messages app is doing things I don't understand

For example, when my bank or someone else sends me a two step verification code, I get it on my phone, but not the Mac I'm sending it from. I've gone into Messages>Preferences and everything is the same as it has always been. I'm using Big Sur, which was true when things were working fine.

Even worse for me is that I sent a message today to someone in my Contacts book and it failed every time I tried. Usually I can apply logic to find solutions, but this thing has me stumped. Any advice would be most appreciated.

I finally moved the problem. On my iPhone, in Settings>Messages, Text Message Forwarding had may iPad turned on, but, for some reason, my Mac turned off. Turning it back on solved the problem. Thanks for the support.

Thank you very much, Nicholas. I am running the latest version of Big Sur and unfortunately I have done all of the things on the page you linked to. I do appreciate your effort to help me.

I'll add that one of the strange things that happened recently was that I sent some test text to a friend of mine. I gave me a "not delivered" message on the Mac. I picked up the iPhone, which has exactly the same number for him. It was the same thread as the picture just above my message from him was the same. On the iPhone it did send and we communicated. On the Mac side, the thread was still there without the conversation with him. Same picture, but missing our recent conversation. Puzzling!
