If upgrading from macOS Sierra or later, your Mac needs 35.5GB of available storage to upgrade. If upgrading from an earlier release, your Mac needs up to 44.5GB of available storage. To upgrade from OS X Mountain Lion, first upgrade to OS X El Capitan, then upgrade to macOS Big Sur.

I am on Catalina right now 10.15.7. the upgrade option shows 12.44 GB as the storage. But as you mentioned I probably need more and also with only 8GB ram, this might be a bit difficult to do.
thanks for your response
Follow the advise of previous post. For a semi=good performance on Big Sur - 8 GB RAM is minimum suggested thought 16 GB would be better.
