Can't reset child's applied password

I lost the password for my child's account on the 8th gen iPad. It prompts me to enter the passcode I use to unlock the iPad which I do but it says the passcode is wrong. I try "forgot passcode" and it sends a notification to my phone which I enter. It then prompts me to enter the passcode again but still won't accept the passcode I use to unlock the iPad. How can I recover the password?!

Did you lose the Apple ID password or the passcode for the device?
