mac mini late 2012

The password (that I know is correct) doesn't work. Been using it ever since I got this computer. Now the Mini is having trouble operating and it won't start up, so I can't get the my stuff off of it before it crashes completely. I can't go any further than the start up screen but cannot go any further. My question is: How can I open the computer without a password, or How do I change the password at the start up screen, so I can open the computer? Really am at a loss for what to do. I have tried to restart it many many times.

Most likely the hard drive in your Mini is failing which means it may be very difficult to recover any files from it. The first thing I would do if you don't have a backup is to run the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. Unfortunately the diagnostics don't detect many types of drive failures. If you have an external full macOS boot drive, then you can run DriveDx to check the health of the Mini's internal hard drive. If you don't have an external macOS boot drive, then I can provide instructions for creating and using a bootable Linux USB stick to check the health of the hard drive. Let me know if you are interested for the instructions.

I would not do anything else until you verify the health of the hard drive since the more the drive is accessed (or attempted to be accessed) or even powered on it will cause a drive failure to get worse where even an expensive data recover service will no longer be able to recover any files from the drive.

Be very careful how you proceed as you may only get one chance to recover the data on your hard drive so choose wisely.

FYI, you should always have frequent and regular backups.

If you want a good bootable Linux utility USB stick, then Knoppix is a good choice. I know the v8.6.1 DVD works, but I have not used the latest v9.x release. Just make sure to download the .iso file with "EN" in the name for "ENglish". Use the downloaded Knoppix .iso file as a source for Etcher (Mac/Windows/Linux) to create the bootable Knoppix USB stick. Option Boot the Knoppix USB stick and select the orange icon labeled "EFI". While Knoppix is booting the Mac may appear to be frozen on the boot picker menu so give Knoppix lots of time to finish booting.

Once Knoppix boots to the desktop click on the "Start" menu icon on the lower left of the Taskbar and navigate the menus to "System Tools ---> GSmartControl". Double-click on the drive icon for the laptop's internal drive to access the drive's health information. Post the whole report here.
