Why does my old iPad still show as a backup to iCloud?

Under iCloud storage, it shows my old iPad (taking 2.2 Gb) and new iPad (using 1.6 Gb). If I delete the old backup, will that have an effect on the new one? I don't want to lose anything on my present iPad.

That will delete only the old backup. If you no longer need it, it is safe to delete.
