iMessages and FaceTime greyed out
iMessages and FaceTime are greyed out on my son's iPhone 4. Wifi is connected. Have tried turning phone off and on again. How can I get iMessages working or is the phone too old somehow?

Can you Text on the iPhone?:
The phone needs to have SMS services for both to work. If you carrier does not provide you with SMS services, then it will not work. So, contact your carrier, asking them about setting up SMS messaging services.
As for having an iPhone 4:
Consider upgrading to a more-recent iPhone model, as his iPhone is incompatible with many of today's devices and services. It cannot be upgraded to the latest iOS(iOS14), and it does not get any more security updates. Thus, it is more prone to failure.

Thank you! No longer greyed out. Now my problem is, it wants me to log in with the previous owner's ID and asks for the password which I don't have. In other respects the phone has been in my son's apple ID for months. What can I do?
It has SMS messaging, it is just iMessages that has been a problem, but see my response to previous post. thank you :)
Actually, it has now sorted itself out. iMessage is now working. Thanks everyone.
