I purchased a brand new Mac Air and one of the Apple USB-C to VGA Multiport adapters. The USB drives will not work through the adapter at all! If I plug in the USB-C drive directly into the laptop, it will be recognized, but not through the adapter. My husband bought the same laptop and it works on his. Is there a setting somewhere I have to set? TIA for any help

Since it is working with another Mac, we recommend taking a look at this article with steps to follow for How to use safe mode on your Mac. This will perform checks and stop certain software from starting up automatically. Once you are in safe mode, test to see if you have the same issue.
