Forgot sign in password

My SO has a new MacBook Air and has forgotten her password. She has only used it a few times, have tried serval password to no avail. When we click on the ? to the right of the password it gives a password hint that makes no sense to her. Reading the forums they talk about using her Apple ID but I can't get to that question on the screen only 'password hint'. It has Apple chip
