Internal hard drive information

My old MacBook pro was damaged due to spill and has not been turning on for a while, is it possible to get my old information from the hard drive? And hopefully safely dispose of it?

Put the internal drive in an enclosure and try copying the files off. If you don't have one, visit a nearby or online computer store.
