Library Cache too large - Should I delete it?

Hi everyone!

My macbook pro has been lagging for the past weeks and it keeps getting worse. System is updated, storage is not at limits and activity monitor shows that even when using intensive apps like illustrator, figma, teams and chrome it doesnt reach the 16gb limit. So I have been trying to figure out what might be the problem. I went on and deleted most of my installed fonts (they were not many) and I also tried using only one or two apps at the same time. Still nothing works.

The problem is not always there. Sometimes I may be working on Figma with a Google meet window running and it works fine, then some other time, with the same set up, it is unusable.

Trying to find a solution I came across several articles suggesting deleting Library Cache. But there is a debate whether that should be done or not. While looking at this solution I saw that my Cache file size is 35gb which I think is huge. Is that normal? Is there a chance something went wrong there? I have the mac for about 2.5 years but I work intensively on it.

Any suggestions will be hugely appreciated!

Thanks

Dimitris

I managed to figure out what the problem was so I'm writing it here in case anyone else has the same problem. It was a faulty third-party USB-to-USBc adapter! I found in Activity Monitor that there was a kernel-task eating up about 800% CPU so while googling it there was an article saying that this may be the result of having a charger or a USB plugged in the left side (the article was saying that you should always put the charger at the right side). I put the charger at the right side, nothing changed. But then when I unplugged my Wacom the kernel_task went from 800% to 1.5%!! I replaced the adaptor with a spare one I had (I should probably get an Apple adapter) and luckily my MacBook runs smoothly since then.

Thanks for the update dimitris_d . Good computing !

You can try a safeboot to clear system cache then reboot as normal...  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Storage ...SSD like to have 15-20% free space at all times to work efficiently; not backed up against the wall "storage is not at limits" (?)

If no insight you can get a good look at your System config. and reveal conflicts or issues, you can download/run this trusted utility https://etrecheck.com
