WindowServer High CPU usage while connected to external monitor - Big Sur

Hello!

The problem described here in the thread is still not solved even with the latest Big Sur update to 11.5.1!

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252089464

I have a Macbook Air M1 with a Samsung C32JG52 QHD monitor which I use as an external monitor! After a few hours of operation, the CPU load of the Windows server process sometimes increases to 100%, no matter how many windows I have open - the mouse jerks, videos I play in the browser via Youtube also, etc... even if I then close some windows, the CPU load of the process always jumps back to high values! For that the Macbook has such a power is the behavior shown as soon as you connect an external monitor but to say the least a disaster, a productive work is not possible!

I've had a bit of a speedup by disabling "Displays have seperate spaces" in the System Preferences, but it's still happening.

Is someone from Apple Support reading along here and is this problem, which apparently also affects various others under Big Sur, finally being addressed?

We are all just users like you.

I don’t have an M1 mac, but I do have a 16” MBP that is used every day attached to a 1080p monitor. I do not see slowdowns associated with it. The amount of CPU used by window server fluctuates but is not like you are experiencing.

It is possible that there is something with M1 macs but it could be something specific to your setup. I expect the latter, as otherwise we’d surely have heard a lot of this here in the forum.

Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here.

Use the “additional text” button and paste the report into the text box.

You're on point with the cooling. I'm using a USB Hub taking up both ports on the left side and it's generating quite a lot of heat. It helped me a little to plug the power cord separately from the other side and raise the back of the laptop by a few millimetres using some rubber pads. It still gets laggy during the video calls but not to the point of "utterly unusable" anymore.

I provided hints and the only answer I got was that there was nothing noticeable in the log I created - really great and really helps me... not! This problem has existed for years and has become a real plague with Big Sur, via Google there are endless forum posts about it and no real solution! As soon as the external monitor no matter what brand is no longer connected, the problem no longer occurs, since no one should tell me that this is not an Apple problem! I am frustrated to the max about this understanding of support, measured against the prices that Apple demands for its hardware is a NoGo!

Oh yes, I help myself now that I close all programs several times a day and open again to be able to work reasonably which is of course a real premium solution to the problem! Thanks for nothing!

I saw it. About ten people, and the thread being closed since last year can hardly be considered an outcry. There are threads in this forum with hundreds of posts. I understand it is a problem, but there is little evidence to let us say "there is clearly a bug", since it seems to affect a small number of users. It could be a bug, but like so many other issues, it could be caused by something else.

This probably has the background that the WindowServer process does not have a constant high load - usually he moves between 30-40% and then it happens again and again that he jumps up to 100% CPU load and thus the system then slows down - this lasts only a few seconds but is because of the frequency really annoying and occurs several times a day! Etrecheck can detect a performance problem but probably only if the load is constantly at a high level...

The problem occurs only in conjunction with the external monitor, when I work only on the Macbook is everything ok!

So if I understand correctly this is not a known problem and therefore there is no solution...

I hate it when you guys not only insult our intelligence, but become dismissive in the process. It is a big. Period. There mere fact that you think that this is the only repository of issues and that the numbers reflect the severity of issues/bugs in your software is the very definition of being arrogant.

A quick Google search will yield numerous upon numerous instances of this bug. Take note of this: When numerous publications start posting articles about how to deal with your “non-bugs” (like this issue), you might want to take notice and do something about it instead of living in denial.

Apple used to take pride in not only the quality of software they made, but actually thought about the customer when developing their wares. I long for a return to those days.

You’ve become the very thing you were against in your infamous 1984 Super Bowl Commercial.

You coming here asking for help and dismissing those who are trying to help is not useful.

Nobody said the problem you have is not real. But just because it happens to you and there are “many reports” in google does not mean it happens to everyone. Millions of users use tgeir macs with external displays. You can either provide information and accept the help you supposedly came here for or you can rant. Your choice.

There you go... being all arrogant again. You were NOT being helpful. You were being dismissive in saying that this is not a bug, and as you eloquently pointed out that I have the right to do, I chose to rant about your dismissal. You also think that a bug MUST affect everyone in order to qualify as a bug.

Something to think about: If you are here to help people as you say that you are, don't dismiss them in the same breath. Keep your dismissive comments to yourself.

Hi,

I too have a problem with this and im using a MBA M1.

I also agree that whatever you posted was of no help.

Im pretty sure this is a bug that not EVERYONE knows about. And maybe not EVERYONE think its an issue to them. Regardless whether you define it as a bug or not, it is still an issue to many of us.

Really hope someone has an actual solution to this.
