How to recover email account (and mail) after turning the mail button off?

It os an old email box that I don’t have access to anymore, I was trying to get rid off the notification popping every few minutes by turning the email button off but now all the emails are gone! Turning it back on didn’t recover the emails and I was wondering if restoring from backup will recover the lost emails?
