Time machine problem: want to back up an external hard disc to my time machine disc

I have no problem backing up my laptop to the time machine external hard drive, but when I have another hard drive attached to my laptop, I can't get time machine to also back it up along with my laptop. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Ensure that the other external drive is not listed in the Time Machine’s excluded list. When you plug in the other external drive then open System Preferences ➔ Time Machine ➔ Options: Select that external drive from the list that you want to be backed up and then click on the Remove button (—). This action will remove the drive from the exclusion list and should begin backing it up.
