Audio messages - kept or not?

I want to know if a person I have sent an audio message to (through iMessage) kept the message I sent. Under the audio clip on my phone, it says “played” rather than “kept”. Does that mean they played it and it has since been deleted? Or is it possible that it is still saved on the recipient’s phone? My assumption has been that, unless it says “kept”, the message has been deleted after being played, is that correct?
