Why doesn't ANY rules work in apple mail

I am on an M1 mac mini Big Sur 11.5.1

NONE of the rules work. It is obvious that spam ALWAYS have strange email address that change with every email from a source. So I do rules for subject and put in one or two words for a subject as putting in the whole subject ALSO yields no joy. I have deleted and redone rules. NO JOY. True for Verizon (AOL) and gmail.

Gmail not showing up in mail macOS Ventura My Gmail account is not showing up in Mail. The account shows up in the list of internet accounts and calendar dates are synchronized in Ical, but next to the email setting the status button it only shows "checking." This is not an issue on my other devices that are still running on Catalina.
