I just got my first IPhone with three months of Apple TV, why am I getting 2 free episodes of an Apple + series and then asked to pay for the rest? Nothing is free with their subscription?

If you are being asked to pay, then you likely are trying to watch a show that is not part of the Apple TV+ subscription service. Individual items that are part of the Tv+ subscription do not have prices on their own
The free 3 months only apply to Apple’s original content. Which can be found by looking for items with the TV+ logo in the corner, or anything inside the Tv+ channel in the Apple TV App.
